How to choose an LED face mask in NZ: a no-nonsense buying guide
Share
LED face masks range from $60 to $900 in New Zealand, and the marketing can be overwhelming. Wavelengths, LED counts, celebrity endorsements... Here are the five things that actually matter β and the ones that don't.
1. The right wavelengths (this is 80% of it)
Light therapy only works at specific, well-studied wavelengths. Look for:
- Red at 630-660nm β the most studied range for skin smoothness and radiance
- Near-infrared at 850nm β penetrates deeper, supports skin recovery
- Blue at 415-470nm β studied for blemish-prone skin
If a product page doesn't state its exact wavelengths, that's a red flag β it usually means generic LEDs that look pretty but do little.
2. Enough light, close to the skin
More LEDs generally means more even coverage. Anything above 100-150 well-placed LEDs is solid for a face mask; flexible masks that sit close to the skin deliver light more efficiently than rigid shells that sit far from it.
3. Eye protection β non-negotiable
LEDs are bright. A well-made mask includes built-in eye protection and complies with international photobiological safety standards (look for IEC 62471). If eye safety isn't mentioned anywhere, walk away.
4. A routine you'll actually keep
The research is clear: results come from consistency (3-5 sessions a week, over weeks). That means comfort matters more than specs β wireless beats plugged-in, lightweight beats bulky, and 10-minute sessions beat 45-minute ones. The best mask is the one you'll actually wear.
5. A brand that stands behind it
Check the boring things: a real returns policy, a warranty, and someone who answers emails. A 30-day return window and a 12-month warranty are fair standards.
What doesn't matter much
- 7+ light colours: beyond red, near-infrared and blue, most extra colours are marketing.
- Celebrity selfies: they're paid. Wavelengths aren't.
- A $900 price tag: you're often paying for the brand name, not better light.
We designed the Skinoraβ’ mask around exactly these five points: studied wavelengths (630/850nm + blue), built-in eye protection, wireless comfort, and a 30-day no-drama return policy β with free shipping across New Zealand.
